Nails on Fire: The Hunger Games Nail Art

Unless you’ve been living under a rock with no internet access recently, you’ll probably be vaguely aware that The Hunger Games hits cinemas this weekend. So of course I had to pay ‘tribute’ on my nails! I’m going to see it on Friday and hopefully I’ll love it as much as I did the books.

I did some Hunger Games nail art back in July last year while I was reading the books which you can see here. I considered re-hashing that design with a few updates but decided to create my imagining of Katniss’ flame manicure that she wears for her pre-games interview with the addition of a Mockingjay pin.

I started with a base coat of Barry M White and then used a nail art brush to freehand the flames. I started with the red (La Femme Cherry Red) on the outside part, then used orange (No7 Tangy) and finally yellow (George Buttercup Shine) right in the centre. I added a few strokes of Rimmel Daisy Chain in the direction of the flames for a little glowy highlight. Finally I painted W7 Black around the edge and finished with a few top coats of NYC.

The Mockingjay was painted with Barry M Gold Foil and a nail art brush.

Party of 5 Glitters? Happy Birthday? Or just a Carnival?

When I spotted this polish yesterday I immediately thought of Deborah Lippmann’s Happy Birthday. It’s a close match and could easily pass for HB from a distance but I’d put it closer to Wet N Wild Party of 5 Glitters. Cris has a great comparison post here where she goes in to all kinds of crazy detail about the glitter.

It’s not really a polish I would normally pick for myself but I was convinced it was a dupe of a £15 bottle of polish for only £1 so I splurged (or not) and picked it up anyway. I’m actually surprised to find myself really liking this polish even though I wouldn’t normally touch multicoloured anything with a ten foot pole!

By the way the polish is called Carnival from a brand called Technic and I found it in The Original Factory Shop but I’ve also seen the brand in Bodycare.

I used Rimmel Grey Matter as a base colour and a sponge to apply Technic Carnival to the tips. I finished with a few coats of NYC In A New York Minute to glaze it.

I love memes. I have one friend IRL who loves memes too (and a few others who are slowly learning) and when we get together, half of our conversation is completely incomprehensible to everyone else because it consists of a lot of meme and fandom referencing! This particular meme, ‘X all the Y‘ originates on Allie Brosh’s amazing blog, Hyperbole and a Half.

Dr Seuss Nail Art!

10 days ago, the lovely Danielle let me know about a nail art competition Nylon Blogs were holding to celebrate Dr Suess’ 108th birthday which you can find here. To date they still haven’t posted a winner, which is kinda sloppy on their part since it was supposed to be posted last Tuesday. So I thought I’d just post mine here already because it doesn’t look likely that they’ll ever post the winner’s manicure and I can’t hold on to this for much longer!

I don’t think it needs too much explaining since Seuss’ work is so iconic. I had to include the ‘Sam I Am’ sign because of course, I Am Sam! The windmill looking things on my middle finger are truffula trees from The Lorax. Obviously then we come to The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham.

It was all freehanded using a nail brush, the outlines are black acrylic paint and if you want any info about the polishes I used for a particular part just ask below!

Stud Up! Day 7: Spots or Stripes?

Today is the last day of Stud Up! week and I’ve had an absolute blast. A theme week was definitely what I needed to bring some inspiration back to my manis.

Today’s nails were inspired by racing stripes so I picked a base colour to match my car. Although unfortunately my little Percy Peugeot doesn’t have any studded stripes!

I used two coats of Cult Nails Time Traveler for my base colour. One nail at a time, I added a coat of clear polish and placed the bullion using a toothpick with the end dipped in clear polish to make it sticky. I finished off with a coat of NYC In A New York Minute.
