One of Rimmel’s latest releases is a set of 5 Matte Pastel shades otherwise know as the Sweetie Heart Velvet Matte Pastels collection. Now that spring has officially sprung, it feels like a good time to be showcasing these pretty pastels.

I’m a huge fan of the matte look and I often go through phases of mattifying everything with a top coat although I’m not big on matte polishes. It’s only because I have an unbreakable top coat habit and it just feels unnatural for me to paint on two coats of colour and call it a day. When I wear matte shades, I’ll often apply a shiny top coat, and then add a matte top coat to take it back to how it was intended. Call me crazy, but there’s a method in this madness… somewhere!

These shades are very pigmented and are all opaque in two coats. When dry, they look really matte – almost like it’ll crumble to dust when you touch it – but feel velvety and not at all like that chalkboard finish you sometimes get.

The Nail Art

For the nail art, I started with a base of Barry M White all over. On the nails where I was planning the chevrons, I topped it with a thin coat of Glisten & Glow HK Girl to make it dry quickly.

I used the Skinny Zig Zag tape from Whats Up Nails to create the chevron pattern with Rimmel You’re Mine (Peach), Chase Me (Mint) and Cheeky Chap (Blue).

For the smudgy soft nails, I dotted all 5 shades on to a sponge and dabbed it on to my nail a few times over to blend them all together. As you can see, the yellow and blue are the ones that pushed through here even though there was a preetty equal amount of each on the sponge! I think that’s a testament to the strength of this yellow – not many yellow polishes could pull their weight against 4 other shades!

I topped these nails with a layer of China Glaze Fairy Dust and finally added two coats of Glisten & Glow HK Girl to finish it all off.
