3 Stripes on my Sneakers (Adidas Nail Art)

When I was a kid it was all about the Adidas poppers… you know the ones I’m talking about! The tracksuit bottoms with three stripes and poppers running all up the side? Please tell me I wasn’t the only one!

I had a grey pair which I wore to death. Man I loved those things when I was 11 but I don’t think I’ve worn a pair of tracksuit bottoms in public since. Oh 90s fashion, thank you for staying in the 90s!

For the stripe nails, I used 2 coats of Barry M White and then topped it with a coat of Sally Hansen Dries Instantly. Next I used striping tape to mark off three stripes and painted over it using Essie Mezmerised before peeling off the tape (tutorial here). On my ring finger I used Mezmerised first and marked off the logo using striping tape to keep my lines nice and straight, then I filled in the gaps using BK Matt White and a nail art brush. Finally, I topped it all of with one coat of Rimmel Matte Finish.

Ahoy There Sailor!

My go to summer style has been nautical for the past few years. I love the colour scheme, the stripes and the inevitable anchors that come with the package. Something sparked in me this week and I’ve gone nautical mad. Naturally a nail design followed!

I used Barry M White as my base colour and then applied a coat of Sally Hansen Dries Instantly (my new favourite top coat!) before applying strips of striping tape across my nail to paint the lines. This tutorial will demonstrate. I used a nail art brush to paint the red and blue colours between the striping tape lines, then freehanded on the gold in between afterwards.

The red is Sally Hansen InstaDri Rapid Red, the blue is Sally Hansen Thinking of Blue and the gold is Barry M Gold Foil. Finally, I finished it all off with two coats of Sally Hansen Dries Instantly.

Where’s Wally Nail Art

Today’s nails are inspired by everyone’s favourite Hide and Seeker…Wally, of ‘Where’s Wally?’ fame! He may be known to some of you as Waldo and he’s well known for his iconic red and white stripy attire and bobbly hat.

After I painted these, One Nail to Rule Them All popped up in my timeline and her profile picture stuck out to me. Without even seeing her Where’s Wally design, I had created one almost identical. Great minds think alike, right? You should all go check out her blog, she’s a fellow UK blogger and perfectionist – her nail art is amazing!

This is the first very intricate freehand design I’ve done in so long! I miss having the time (and inspiration) to create these manicures. I seem to be getting my spark back and I’m getting better at managing my free time so, painted fingers crossed, there’ll be more of them in store.

I used Barry M Matt White as my base colour, then freehanded on the red stripes using Rimmel Heart on Fire and a nail art brush. I added the red glequins while the red polish was still wet.
For the man himself, I used black acrylic paint with a nail brush to paint the outlines. I used Deborah Lippmann Fashion for his skin, Essie Glamour Purse for his hair and some more Rimmel Heart on Fire for the red details. Then I had to go over some of the outlines again. I had to concentrate so hard when I was doing his eyes not to make him look like a googly-eyed fish!
Finally I topped it off with two coats of NYC In a New York Minute.

Christmas Nail Mashup!

Another December day, another Christmas manicure! As you all predicted I couldn’t keep my nails away from the festivities for too long. These are the nails I did for the Christmas ‘Do’ at work. I think the phrase ‘Christmas Do’ is a very British thing. In the US, you’d just call it a Christmas Party right? Or do you have another name for it?

My base colour is Barry M White. For the candy cane nails, I used one coat of Seche Vite before marking off striped sections with thin cuts of scotch tape and painted on Rimmel Heart on Fire. While that was still wet I peeled off the scotch tape and, once dry, used a nail art brush to paint Barry M Red Glitter over the stripes.

The Rudolph nail is one from last year. I used Essie Glamour Purse as the base colour, Rimmel Desire for the lines and Barry M Red Glitter again for the nose.
Finally, the Christmas Tree which was inspired by a Wacky Laki manicure was created using glequins from Born Pretty Store (tutorial here).
I topped it all off with two coats of Seche Vite to smooth it over.

31DC2012 Day 27: Inspired by Artwork

Day 27 of the challenge is here and I can’t believe how close we are to the end. Just 4 more challenge days and it will all be over… again! Today we have to do nails inspired by artwork and I chose a piece called ‘Composition II in Red, Blue and Yellow’ by Piet Mondrian who was around during the De Stijl movement. And that, folks, is all the info I can give you on the artwork. I just know it’s minimalist and I like it!

My ring finger is supposed to be an exact replica of the art but I just improvised on the rest.

I used Barry M White as my base colour and then used Black Acrylic Paint with a striping brush to paint on all the lines. Then I took Sally Hansen InstaDri Rapid Red, NYC Lexington Yellow and Sally Hansen Thinking of Blue to fill in some of the squares with a nail art brush.

I finished it off with two coats of NYC In a New York Minute. I know I said that I hate this top coat nowadays but I found a few bottles in one of my beloved bargain stores and took a chance that they’d be the old formula and so far, I think they are!

Aphrodite Lacquers Swatches: Auction, Supernova and Margarita

This is the first weekend for months where I have absolutely no plans so I’ve had a pretty lazy Saturday. So far today I’ve worked my way through the entire first series of Workaholics, picked up where I left off on Homeland, dyed my hair and painted my nails about 7 times! I consider that quite a day, especially for a weekend!

Today I’ve got swatches of some polishes from Aphrodite Lacquers*. These polishes have been sitting on my desk for swatching for weeks now but with the 31 Day Challenge going on, I haven’t had much time for swatching. With the quick break I’m taking from it this weekend I finally had time to sit down and test out these beauties.

Auction is a pearly white base packed with blue square glitter and small black hexes. I’ve used 3 coats straight on to my naked nail except on my ring finger where I used two coats of Sally Hansen Ion under 3 coats of Auction. There are two coats of Seche Vite top coat on every nail.

Supernova is definitely my favourite of the three. It’s pink purple and silver hexes in a black jelly base. I used three coats for drama but two will give you full coverage. I used two coats of Seche Vite top coat.

Margarita is a beautiful green glitter polish somewhere between lime green and bottle green. It contains green hexes, slightly smaller blue hexes and silver glitter in a green jelly base. For this swatch I used two coats of NYC High Line Green as a base and then three coats of Margarita, except on my index finger which is just 3 coats of Margarita. Using a green base has given a slightly brighter result but the polish looks just as great on its own. Two top coats of Seche Vite.

NY Fashionail Week Day 4: Kate Spade

A while ago, a friend of mine asked if I could do some gingham nail art for her and this past weekend, I did! When I tweeted a picture of the manicure in question, Amy from Gotham Polish, came back and asked if I’d seen Deborah Lippmann’s nail art for Kate Spade’s NYFW show? I immediately checked out her blog post to see the nail art in question and she had indeed created gingham nails very similar to the ones I did. Great minds think alike hey?!
That’s pretty much how this theme week was born, so thank you Amy for pointing out that they have cool nail art at New York Fashion Week!

The catwalk models had all fingers the same colour but I wanted to try out as many shades as I could. I tried to go for polishes that I knew were slightly see through to recreate the gingham effect but only the blue and green seemed to work for that, the other colours were too opaque.

I used Barry M White as a base colour and a striping brush to paint on the stripes in Barry M Mint Green, Barry M Indigo, NYC Lexington Yellow and Miss Sporty Orange. I finished with two coats of Essence Better Than Gel.
