Hugs For Emily: Chevron Tribal Nail Art

Our friend Emily is something of an exceptional character in so many ways. I’ll try not to get too soppy here but she’s one of the first people I met through blogging and I’ll always count her as one of my best ‘internet friends’! She’s always there to offer advice and recommend a good TV Show. If it weren’t for her, I would still be stuck in a pretty awful place with my photography. What can I say? I owe her a lot! She’s going through a bumpy patch at the moment so I’ve joined forces with a few more of Emily’s friends to dedicate a day of blogging to her. Just so she knows we’ve all got her back! We’re all taking inspiration from one of Emily’s past nail designs. I’ve gone with her recent piCture pOlish Blog Fest chevron design. Like really gone with it! I have the exact same polishes in my stash so I tried to copy it down to the last detail. I didn’t know if I’d be able to squeeze all the details on to my nubbins but I just about made it!

For this nail art, I used Barry M White as the base colour where I was going to be painting the chevrons with a thin coat of Glisten & Glow HK Girl Top Coat to dry them hard and fast.

I applied Hex’s Chevron Decals and painted each chevron individually using piCture pOlish Chillax and Mad Magenta. I also painted the ‘leftover’ fingers using these shades.

I painted all the details using black and white acrylic paint with a skinny nail brush.

Finally I added a few small pastel studs and topped everything with a coat of HK Girl.

Pastel Geometric Nail Art | The Nailasaurus | UK Nail Art Blog

I was jonesing for a pastel mani today but I didn’t want to get too girly with it. As the title suggests, I went for something nice and sweet but equally naughty at the same time. I remembered this Hex nail charm and knew it would be perfect to add a touch of ~~class~~ badass to my nails.

The base colour for the nail charm is Barry M Heather and the Fuck You charm is from Hex Nail Jewelry.

For the negative space cross on my ring finger, I used Striping Tape to mark off the cross on my bare nail, then painted over it with Maybelline Ceramic Blue.

The colour block nails are a base of Delush Make Me Blush. I applied a thin coat of HK Girl and waited ten minutes for it to dry. Next I placed a strip of scotch tape over the top portion of my nail and painted over it with Sally Hansen Green Tea. Finally for those nails, I added a thin white line using the White Liner Polish from Born Pretty Store.

The pink glitter is Sally Hansen Razzle Dazzler.

It’s all topped off with two coats of HK Girl.

Hex There, Sailor!

Nope that’s not a typo, it’s time for some more Hex-y nails! Today I’m wearing the Anchor No. 2 charm so of course it had to be a nautical themed mani.

I used Barry M White as my base colour here. The blue is Barry M Blue Grape and the red is Barry M Gelly Red. On my thumb, I used Sally Hansen Guilded Lily for the sparkle party on my thumb!

For the stripes I coated my white base with Essence Better Than Gel Nails Fast Dry to make it dry quickly. I cut a few thin strips of scotch tape, suck them where I wanted the white to show through and painted over the whole thing using Blue Grape.

The half moons and the frame on my ring finger are all freehanded with a nail art brush.

It’s all topped with two coats of Revlon Quick Dry Top Coat. Finally, I added the nail charm to my ring finger. It’s Anchor No. 2 from Hex Nail Jewelry and I attached it using nail glue.

31DC2013 Day 17: Glitter

Even though Glitter was the only prompt that I had an idea for before the challenge even began, today’s design still isn’t as glitter packed as I’d originally planned because I kept changing my mind about the specifics! I ended up with one glitter covered nail and a few sprinkles here and there so I think it can still pass right?

As I mentioned in my Day 15 post, I’m working my way through a selection of Hex nail charms and second on my list is the Unicorn! ($1.75 at hexnailjewelry.com HERE). I wanted to do some nails that were ethereal, mystical and enchanting to match the charm so I knew it would have to include holographic glitter and pastels which is why I saved it for Day 17. I’m so in love with this nail art and it’s made me realise that I definitely need more holographic glitters.

The creme colours are China Glaze Pink-ie Promise and Barry M Prickly Pear. The glitter is H+M Jo Is In The House. To get full coverage on my index finger, I used a base coat of Barry M Prickly Pear and then sponged on the glitter. For the nails with glitter on, I used a base coat of PVA Glue to make for easy, peel off removal.

I topped everything off with two coats of No7 Stay Perfect Top Coat and applied the nail charm using a dot of nail glue.

31DC2013 Day 15: Delicate Print

Today’s nail art is another labour of love inspired by the Mehndi patterns traditionally associated with Hindu weddings. I have a few charms from Hex Nail Jewelry to show you guys this month and each one of them has a completely different theme which inspires me in its own way. Today’s charm is Elephant No. 2 which is what brought about the eastern inspiration for this nail art.

Elephants are actually my favourite animal ever! I was too young to remember but my Mum always tells me the story of when I got to feed apples to ‘Wendy the Elephant’ at Bristol Zoo in the early 90s when I was just a toddler. You were allowed to take your own apples in to the Zoo to feed her so we would always pick up a bag of ‘happles’, as my little brother would call them, on the way there!

I used Barry M Lychee as my base colour and freehanded on the Mehndi patterns using brown acrylic paint and a nail art brush.

For the accent finger I painted on NYC Midtown Mink and added a top coat. When it was dry, I attached the Hex Charm using a blob of clear nail polish. In the future I’ll probably attach the charms with nail glue because I didn’t feel 100% confident that the charm would stay on with just nail polish. I thought it was worth a go though!

Everything (except the charm) is top coated with Sally Hansen Dries Instantly.
