Superheroes Challenge: Disney Hero... I Fight For The Users

As I mentioned earlier in the week that I'm really not a huge Disney fan. The fairytale stuff just gets on my nerves a bit and I couldn't decide on a hero character that I really wanted to portray on my nails. Then a light bulb went on somewhere and I remembered that the Tron films are made by Disney. BINGO!

I went for a very minimalist approach and if I didn't tell you this manicure was Tron themed, you may not be able to guess! It's based on Tron's suit from the first movie and my ring finger is supposed to be The Grid.

The base colour is Rimmel Grey Matter and I used a nail art brush with Barry M Cyan Blue for all the details.

My Stamping Plates and Storage

Disney Hero coming soon but for now, here's a video in which I show you my stamping plates and how I store them.

I've been having technical issues so I restored my computer to factory settings today. This means I'm back to square one - no software and no files. However, I'm not totally clueless and I did back everything up first, it's just gonna take a while for normal working conditions to resume! First priority is Photoshop so fingers crosssed I'll be able to post some nails tonight!

Perfect Paisley Print

Today is a challenge day and I'm supposed to be posting my Disney Hero but I'm gonna have to take a rain check. This is the first time I've ever skipped a challenge day, EVER, so I hope you won't be too mad! I just haven't had time to do the manicure but as soon as it's finished, it'll be posted. You can still see the other ladies' hero posts though! Charlotte's Nails, The CrumpetNorthern Nails, PishPosh and Polish and Spellbinding Nails.

Luckily I have a back up plan - more new Bundle Monsters! I just couldn't resist showing you this pattern, I mean look at the amount of detail in there! I'm quite the seasoned nail stamper and I've never seen that much small detail in a stamp before. Very impressive, Bundle Monster, verrrrry impressive indeed.

The base colour is Sinful Colors Last Chance and I stamped using GOSH Metallic Green with Bundle Monster plate BM315.

Testing, Testing...

My 2012 Bundle Monster plates came yesterday so as you can imagine, it was a very exciting day here! I didn't actually get a chance to play with them until the evening though and even then I forgot to take pictures so you're seeing a day old mani in the pictures - please ignore any chipping!

I was lucky enough to win them in the Bundle Monster nail art competition which is becoming something of an annual tradition! But after months of anticipation, the plates are finally available to buy on Amazon.com and the Bundle Monster website. I haven't spotted them on Amazon.co.uk just yet. If you're in the UK, I'm pretty sure you can still buy them from Amazon.com but there is a shipping charge and they'll take a little while to get here. I'm sure they'll pop up on the UK site soon though.

I went a bit crazy and just tested out some of the first designs that caught my eye. The plates I've used here are BM322, BM317 and BM306.

The base colour is A-England Galahad* and I stamped with No7 Poolside Blue.

UPDATE! The plates are now available on Amazon.co.uk!

Superheroes Challenge: Disney Villain... Off With Their Heads

Give me comic books over Disney any day! I've been really stuck for ideas this week but I think I've managed to come up with something decent. I really wanted to do Cruella De Vil because 100 Dalmatians is really the only Disney movie I remember watching as a kid - the 1996 live action version I mean! I just wasn't much of a Disney child.
Well I ultimately decided on the Queen of Hearts because I've had a long day and I wanted something simple and easy. What a cop out, right! I loved Helena Bonham Carter's portrayal of her in Tim Burton's version but I'm not sure I've ever seen the Disney animated original. I'm just full of disappointments today aren't I?!

I used L'Oreal Resist and Shine Red, W7 Black, Barry M White, Barry M Gold Foil and Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Sun Kissed. As always, the details were applied with a nail art brush.

Previously: Disney Princesses

As always, the other ladies taking part will have some awesome designs today too!

Wah Nails Book of Nail Art Review (with Nail Art!)

Many of you reading this blog will already know Wah Nails as a trend setting nail brand. What started as a small business idea for Sharmeadean Reid in 2009 has turned in to a worldwide success and changed the face of nail art as we know it. Sharmadean is such an inspiring figure in the nail art community. She took her passion, turned it in to a successful enterprise and changed the way we look at nail art all at the same time. I have heaps of respect for that chick!

Following the success of her London salons, she's released a book called 'The Wah Nails Book of Nail Art'* which is packed full of nail art tutorials and tells the story of Wah Nails and the 'Wah Girls'.
To date, the book has only been available in the UK, but this year they've given it a pretty new cover and a US release date of July 10th!

There are a total of 25 tutorials in the book, showcasing how to achieve some of Wah Nails' most popular designs. Each tutorial page has really easy to follow step-by-step instructions and pictures. My favourite part is the page opposite each tutorial where you actually get to see one of the Wah Girls wearing the design so you get a real idea of what it looks like on the nails!

Of course, I had to try some of the designs out myself. Left to right they are: POW!, Basket Case, Double Studded and Drippy. The book contains tutorials for all of them.
Most of the tutorials recommend using a Nail Art Pen which would be way easier for beginners than my way of using a striping brush dipped in polish.

The Wah Nails book of Nail Art retails for $14.95 USD / £9.99 GBP.

It will hit shelves in the US on July 10th and you can buy it (or pre-order) from Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble for $9.14**.

In the UK, you can buy it on Amazon.co.uk for £6.19** or pick it up in WH Smith, Waterstones and selected Urban Outfitters stores near you.

Look Beauty: Nail Pop Glamrock Swatch and Nail Art

The Nail Pops from Look Beauty have been on my wishlist for a while now but at £5 for a 10ml bottle, they're a bit out of my every day price range. Luckily for me, they're running money off offer across the range and the Nail Pops have £2 off. Now £3 a bottle is a price that won't keep me awake at night, so I indulged in the shade that struck me most out of the range - Glamrock. It's purple glitter packed in to a deep berry jelly and can I just say? It's amazing!

I was tempted by just about every single colour in the range but I'm trying to limit my polish purchases because I'm running out of space to store it all! I've decided I'm only going to purchase polishes that really stand out from the crowd and only if I don't have something similar in my collection already. Glamrock definitely fits that criteria and I also have my eye on Catsuit from the same range - it's a blue glitter but the pieces are a bit chunkier.

As gorgeous as this colour is I was dreading removal, as I always do with glitters, but it came of surprisingly easily. It did need a bit more work than 'normal' polishes but I think it was easier than quite gritty glitters because the glitter is very fine.

All pictures are 3 thin coats with a top coat of Cult Nails Wicked Fast. You'd be safe with two thicker coats but I wanted quite heavy coverage.

Superheroes Challenge: DC Hero... Superman

I know Superman is kind of an obvious choice but sometimes that's the best way to go! He gets a bad rap these days for being kind of irrelevant and you have to admit his powers are kind of lame compared to the superheroes we know today. But you've gotta give the guy some credit, he's kind of 'the original' superhero and he can't really keep up with his modern contemporaries who have all those cool technologies and weapons to make them awesome.
(Superman Wiki)

I had a hectic day but I had a swatch post ready to go until I realised a few hours ago that it was a challenge day and I didn't even have any nail art prepared. Whoops! I knew who my hero was but I hadn't even thought about the nail art so I kept it simple. The 'Super S' is so iconic that I don't think it needs much else to get the point across!

Guitar Hero Nail Art 2.0

Back in January, I got my Guitar Hero set with one game - Warriors of Rock. 6 months later, I'm still playing it and I have 4 of the games! I really thought it would just be a bit of fun and a passing fad but I'm still completely addicted! I'm more of a drumming girl but guitar is fun too!

I did do some GH nail art back then but I wanted to update it a bit since I'm now an 'Expert' which means I get to use the dreaded orange button! I thought I would take advantage of my square shaped nails and just frame them because they're pretty much exactly the same shape as the buttons on the guitar.

I used W7 Black for my base colour. Next I took Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Whirlwind White to draw on the frames before adding the colours to make sure they'd be as bright as possible.
The colours are an unnamed red from L'Oreal Resist and Shine, NYC Lexington Yellow, Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Pacific Blue and Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Sun Kissed.

Superheroes Challenge: DC Villain...Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn is completely 'bat' crazy but you have to admire her in some ways! She's very loyal (some might say a sycophant) and incredibly resourceful. Her first appearance was in a Batman cartoon back in the 90's and the character was only created to serve as The Joker's sidekick in one episode. In 2009, Harley made it on to IGN's Top 100 Comic Book Villains at #45. Not bad for a psycho psychiatrist from Brooklyn!

Aside from Comics, her biggest role in mainstream media was in Batman: Arkham Asylum but I would really love to see her brought to life in a movie. Damn you, Christopher Nolan! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for another Batman reboot in the future. Preferably with Zach Snyder directing but he's on that whole Man of Steel thing (hint hint) so that doesn't seem very likely. Can you imagine his slow-mo scenes in a Batman movie... heaven! Hey, a fangirl can dream!

Superheroes Nail Art Challenge: DC Villain

Superheroes Nail Art Challenge: DC Villain

I used an unnamed L'Oreal Resist and Shine polish for the red base and W7 Black for the harlequin patterns using a nail art brush.
I painted Harley herself on a base of Barry M White using Black Acrylic Paint for the outlines and details plus the aforementioned L'Oreal red. I used Rimmel Grey Matter to fill in the background and for the shading. Her eyes are Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Brisk Blue.
I added two top coats of Cult Nails Wicked Fast to finish it off.

Q and A: The Answers Part 1!

This week I finally got my hands on a new camcorder after my last one broke halfway through filming! I'm still such a video rookie. This video took half a day to film and much longer to edit. YouTube is so much harder than the pros make it look!

The video below contains the answers to some of the questions left in the Q and A post from back in May. I split the questions in to categories, just to add a bit of structure, because there were so many. I've had to split it in to two videos because I talk way too much! The first, this one, contains Nail Art and Equipment questions and I'll soon be uploading the second which will answer the Nail Polish, Nail Care and Other questions.

Put The Pieces Back Together

This idea has been sitting on a post-it note for a while now. I actually have a wall covered in post-its with nail art ideas on, I just need to find the time to get through them! Blue is my favourite colour to wear on my nails and it's been way too long since it graced my nails. Since I couldn't decide exactly which shade I wanted to wear, this design was ideal.

I used Barry M Blueberry Ice Cream for my base colour. Next, I freehanded on 2/4 of the puzzle shapes on each nail with No7 Poolside BlueSally Hansen Insta-Dri Brisk Blue, and a nail art brush.
I outlined the shapes using the same small nail art brush with white acrylic paint.
Finally, I topped it with two coats of Cult Nails Wicked Fast.

Sandy Skittle

It seems I've dug myself in to a comfy little nail art nook this past week. There have been two manis that I fell head over heels for and have been longing to wear again - the purple skittle mani and the sandy glitter sandwich
But I don't want to bore you all, so I imagined what their lovechild would look like and painted that on my nails instead! The result is a Sandy Skittle! I don't know where I keep plucking these absurd names from but they do seem to roll off the tongue and I think they are perfectly descriptive.

I had so many pictures to choose from today, I had to put some after the jump. You'll also find all the info about polishes there too.

Superheroes Challenge: Marvel Hero... Wasp!

So we've seen the Villain and today, Marvel's hero is riding, or should I say flying, in to save the day! I know that Venom is Spider-Man's arch enemy but I've done Spider-Man nail art in the past so I thought I'd try something new today. I've actually done most of the popular Marvel heroes before (Marvel even has it's own tag!) so I had to reach a bit further than the Hollywood blockbusters for today's nail art.

I chose to do Wasp, aka Janet Van Dyne. Some of you might recognise her from one of the Avengers cartoon series. I know that's where I first saw her and when I was coming up with ideas for today's nail art, I had an idea for her immediately! The wings came out better than I expected since I had the idea to make them pearly right at the last second and it definitely makes them more convincing as wasp wings!

I used NYC Lexington Yellow and Cult Nails Cruisin Nude as my base colours. All the black detail is done with a small nail art brush and black acrylic paint. Finally, I used Rimmel Daisy Chain to go over the wings and give them that delicate, pearly effect.
I finished it all of with two coats of Cult Nails Wicked Fast.

Load N Vote Nail Art Contest!

This month, I've teamed up with a new website called Load N Vote to bring you my first Nail Art Contest!
All you have to do is upload a picture of your nail art to be in with a chance of winning Essie's 2012 Summer Collection, Bikini So Teeny (swatches here)!! The best part is, the contest is open worldwide!

There is no theme to this contest, just enter your most impressive nail art using whichever tools and techniques you want to. Show us your skillzz and the public will vote for a winner.

My favourite part about the Load n Vote way of doing things is the fool proof voting process. All the entries go in to an algorithm, voters are shown two entries at time and must pick their favourite until every entry has been seen. The design that proves most popular throughout the whole voting period wins. Simple as that and there's no fear of it becoming a popularity contest, it's completely down to you and your mad skills. So, ladies, brushes at the ready and it's time to sprinkle some sparkle!!

Today's nail art is based on the site's logo and I added some glitter for good measure! After all, I can't tell you to go and enter if I'm not gonna put some work in myself! Check below for all the dates and info about entering.

Terms
The contest is open worldwide
You can enter any nail design at all as long as it's your own work
The picture you submit must show at least four fingers
It can be a brand new design or one that you've done in the past
One entry per account

Time Frame
As the site name suggests, there is a loading period and a voting period.
You can load your design from now until the last day of the month - June 30th at 11.59pm EST
At the stroke of midnight on June 30th, the contest rolls straight over to the voting phase which will run until July 20th at 11:59am EST.

Because I know I can always figure these things out easier if there's a good visual, I've made us a little timeline to avoid any confusion!

Who's excited?! I know I am, I can't wait to see what you all come up with. Good luck everyone!

Superheroes Challenge: Marvel Villain... We Are Venom!

Welcome to the Heroes and Villains challenge! I'm so excited about this challenge, I love love love nerdy nail art so I know I'm going to be creating some kick-ass manis over the next four weeks and I'm sure the other ladies will too. I can't wait to see what we all come up with.
In case you missed it, I posted all the details of the challenge on Sunday. This week, it's Marvel and today a nasty villain has come to town. I chose Venom who normally appears as Spider-Man's arch enemy! I can't think of much else to say today so I'll just leave you with the pictures!

I used W7 Black as my base colour. All the white detail was done with White Acrylic Paint and the grey is Rimmel Grey Matter.

Head over to the other ladies' blogs to see which Marvel villain they chose to immortalise on their nails!
