'I Wanna Go Surfing' Tutorial

Thank you for the amazing feedback on my last post! A lot of you requested a tutorial so here you go!

I had a great time camping but had to trim my nails a bit because they kept breaking from all the manual work! I quite like them short but since I've been doing more freehand nail art, it helps to have a bigger canvas so I'm hoping they'll grow back quite quickly.

I'm starting a new job this week so I don't know how often I'll be able to blog. I'm hoping regularly but we'll see how it goes.

I Wanna Go Surfing

This is a scheduled post so with any luck, I will be surfing right now! Hopefully the weather is nice, the waves are tip top and I'm having an awesome time in the ocean. If not, it's probably raining and I'm stuck in a tent playing cards with my Dad and Brother!

So today's mani is inspired by my favourite part of summer. The surfing. I'm what you might call 'high maintenance' but I'll happily spend a week slumming it in a tent if it means I get to go in the sea every day.

The Drums - Let's Go Surfing

I used Barry M Cyan Blue as a base.
The waves are a mixture of BYS Metallic Blue, BYS Fools Paradise, No7 Poolside Blue and Rimmel Daisy Chain.
For the breaks of the waves, I used an unnamed Collection 2000 White applied with a sponge.
Topped of with a coat of NYC.

Meet EOTD and NOTD. They're twins!

I've been trying to create a video tutorial for a Smokey Eye look all week after someone requested it on Facebook but it seems like the world is against me on this one.
The first time I tried, I just didn't get good enough footage because I'm still a rookie. On my second attempt, I got the footage but it refuses to play on my computer. It just crashes any software that I try to open it with, including the editing program! Très frustrating!

So anyway, here are my takes on the ever classic smokey eye and it's companion, the smokey nail!

I used:
E.L.F. Eyelid Primer
Bourjois Eyeshadow - Blanc
17 Solo Eyeshadow - Thunderbolt
MUA Eyeshadow - Shade 20
E.L.F. Cream Eyeliner - Black
Jerome Alexander Mascara

I think I'll try one more time to make a tutorial for this look but if the universe can find yet another way to tell me that it's just not meant to be, I'll have to concede!

I created a (sort of) gradient using one sponge and three colours. I utilised a combination of dabbing and dragging the sponge
Collection 2000 - White
La Femme - Grey Cream
Rimmel - Black Satin
Top coat of NYC

I'm going camping this week so I won't be blogging. I have one holiday inspired nail art post scheduled for Wednesday and I should be back to blogging by the weekend.

Superheroine Nail Art

Since my Week of Geek and the amazing positive reception it received I've been jotting down every nerdy nail idea that comes to me! Miss Dalum suggested that I do a Superheroine themed mani which I think perfectly compliments the Marvel Heroes themed nails where I only featured the fellas! There's a mix of heroes from Marvel and DC in here today.

While we're on the subject, has everyone seen the trailer for The Amazing Spiderman? It looks, well, amazing! You can see it here if you haven't yet.

Pinky to thumb: Mystique, Jean Grey/Phoenix, Catwoman, Spiderwoman, Wonder Woman

Try My Two Tone

This mani, like yesterday's, came about when I just got too carried away trying to add a dash of whatever came to mind!

I knew I wanted to use scotch tape and a stamp design so I did the base colour and stamp and left it overnight to dry and to give me time to decide what to do. 'Blue' I thought, but when the blue was on it just looked too clunky so I thought I'd set myself the challenge of trying to line up the stamps to get a two-tone effect on my nails. Turns out I needn't have bothered because the pattern is irregular so you wouldn't even notice if it wasn't matched. I think I'll set myself the mission of trying it with a more uniform pattern to see if I can get it to match up.

Konad Plate: M57
Base Colour: Barbara Daly - Purplicious
Konad Colour: GOSH - Metallic Purple
Top Coat of NYC
To create the two tone look, I sectioned off the top part of my nail with scotch tape and painted on Barry M Cyan Blue. I removed this tape straight away and let the blue dry. Then I lined up more strips of tape with the blue polish and stamped over it with GOSH Metallic blue, attempting to line up the patterns and added another top coat.

How do you guys feel about me using larger pictures in my blog posts? All the pictures I post are click through's anyway so you can see a bigger version if the mood takes you, but I thought I would go bigger on the main page. Do you like it or do they just take up too much space?

Bit of This. Bit of That.

This is one of those mani's that I was constantly looking at and thinking 'I could add this'. There's a very real danger there of it turning into a tacky abomination of a manicure but I think I managed to reel myself in enough to leave it at a slightly over the top mumble jumble of things!

It was originally just a nude nail and I wasn't going to apply any kind of nail art but I wanted to try out my Barry M Cyan Blue for stamping because I've had it for quite a while and it's gone too thick to really paint my nails with anymore. It actually worked really well! It would not have been this opaque when I first bought it but over time as it's thickened, it has turned in to a stamping polish!

The glitter is one that I found in a £1 bucket. It's not really packed with glitter so it's really just for layering. It reminds me of China Glaze Medallion. It's got gold glitter and holographic hexagonal pieces.

Base Colour: E.L.F. - Innocent
Stamp Colour and Tips: Barry M - Cyan Blue
W7 - Black
BYS - Gold Finger

You Tube Take Two

I made a new video today to demonstrate the basics of Konad. I know I already made one but I took it down because I just hated it. The lighting was terrible and it was in 4:3 so the video was squashed and OMG I CAN'T HANDLE THAT KIND OF IMPERFECTION!

Phew! So yeah, in case you didn't notice I am a bit of a perfectionist and this video is way more up to standard.
So please... watch, enjoy and leave some feedback if you have the time!

Also, if anyone's interested I made my first make-up tutorial yesterday! It's called 'How To: Perfect Winged Eyeliner in Less than Two Minutes' and it's just a very quick video of me applying my eyeliner for anyone that was curious about my technique. If you're interested you can watch that here or on my channel. I'm working on more detailed tutorials but I still haven't decided whether I will be talking in any videos!

Pink Wednesday: I Missed You, Half Moons

I was scrolling through my archives a few days ago and remembered how much I like half moon manicures. It's been ages since I did one so I'm rocking the look today for Pink Wednesday.

I used BYS Flirty Sparkle as a base, Collection 2000 Moonlight Shine applied with a brush for the moons and some bullion from Born Pretty Store. All topped off with a coat of NYC Top Coat.

EOTD 5: Inspired Soft Summer Pastels

I'm currently catching up on a few episodes of Angry Boys. I really think Chris Lilley is a comedic genius! The humour isn't to everyone's taste but I think he does such a good job of making his characters relatable, I would definitely recommend watching it (and Summer Heights High if you get the chance!). I also have yesterday's True Blood to watch and when my little brothers get home we'll be watching WWE's big Money in the Bank match. Only someone spoiled it for me on Twitter yesterday so I already know who wins. Boo.

Here is a quick look inspired by my favourite flowery headband...

I used:
MUA Eyeshadow - Shades 1, 6 and 4
E.L.F. Cream Eyeliner - Metallic Olive

'I've had enough trouble for a lifetime' (Harry Potter Nail Art)

How could I not dedicate today's nails to Harry Potter?! I've read all the books and seen all the films so I, like many, will be sad to see the end of the series. I'm not actually sure when I will be seeing the film. I could go on Sunday but I don't like going to the cinema when it's really really busy so I'm tempted to even wait until next week! I know that conviction won't hold up for very long though!

Here's some trivia for you. J.K. Rowling grew up in the area that I live in. I even went to the same high school she did!

Thumb to Pinky: Deathly Hallows, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff.
I used Bundle Monster plate BM20 for the stripes.

When I was checking the house colours (I know them of course, but I wanted to check I was 100% right because it would have been super embarrassing if I used the wrong colours) I found an interesting article about the significance of the colours which you can read here.

Polishes used:
Deathly Hallows - Rimmel Black Satin, white acrylic paint
Houses: Base colour first, stamp colour second
Slytherin - BYS Fern, Collection 2000 Moonlight shine
Ravenclaw - Collection 2000 Unnamed Bronze, NYC Glossies 243B
Gryffindor - La Femme Cherry Red, Sally Hansen Chrome Amber
Hufflepuff - George@ Asda Buttercup Shine, W7 Black

May the Odds be Ever in Your Favour (The Hunger Games Nail Art)

I recently read The Hunger Games trilogy and I absolutely love it, I highly recommend it! Has anyone else read it?
Fear not if you're not the reading type, the first movie is set to be released next March and I can't wait!

Pinky to thumb: Katniss' bow and arrow, 'Girl on Fire', Mockingjay Pin, District 12, 'The Hunger Games'

TUMBLR'ERS Please do not repost this. There is a post you can reblog here. Thank you!

Leave It To The Professionals

Sorry for the eerie silence around here. I've been busy this week looking for a full-time job since I don't think I'll be going back to University in September. These are my 'interview' nails, I don't want to wear anything too loud so I went for a nude with some subtle stamping.

Plate: Bundle Monster - BM205
Base Colour: Cult Nails - Cruisin' Nude
Konad Colour: Collection 2000 Hot Looks - Dynasty

Week of Geek Day 7: May The Force Be With You (Star Wars Nails)

Welcome to the last day of my Week of Geek and thank you so much if you are still with me! I want to say thanks to everyone that has taken the time to read and comment this week, it means a lot. I really didn't know how the idea would be received so I'm really happy to see that you are all fellow dorks like me!

As I said yesterday, I still have loads of ideas so I'll be posting a lot of manis like this in the future. It seems I've opened a can of worms because new ideas are hitting me every day.

I used (mainly):
Barry M - Mushroom

Week of Geek Day 6: Social Media Nails

If I'm any kind of nerd, it's a computer nerd. And if there's one thing I love about computers, it's the internet.
Today's nails are dedicated to the Social Media sites that I use, although I don't know if they actually qualify as geeky? Since I started blogging, social media has become part of my daily life. I honestly get twitchy if I go too long without checking at least my email inbox and I'm a total YouTube addict. Shaytards, anyone?!

I'm sad to be coming to the end of my Week of Geek. I've had so much fun thinking up these designs and I still have plenty of ideas so, fear not, I'll be running them off every now and then whenever I have the time to do them.

Social Media Nail Art

Pinky to thumb: Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, Blogger, Youtube
The orange I used for the blogger logo bled like a bish but it's the only orange polish I own! Obviously the 'B' in the middle is supposed to be white but that just wasn't happening, even after I went over it THREE TIMES!

Week of Geek Day 5: Doctor Who Nails

I don't know how familiar American readers will be with Doctor Who but here in the UK pretty much everyone is aware of it. It's been running on the BBC since 1963 which makes it the longest running Sci-Fi series in the world and you could definitely tag it with 'cult favourite'. Since 2005 they've been filming it in the city where I go to Uni and live for most of the year but so far I haven't spotted them filming anywhere.

However, they filmed a bit for BBC's Sherlock in the University when I was driving past with friends one night and stopped to get a closer look. A security guy came up to the car and we asked what was going on, when he said they were filming, I blurted out 'IS IT DOCTOR WHO?'. It wasn't!
AND I walked right through the set of Killer Elite last summer. If I knew Jason Statham and Robert De Niro were in the area I would have stuck around a while.

10 nerd points go to the first person to tell me what TARDIS stands for. No cheating please!

Pinky to thumb: 'Nebula nail', the TARDIS, Dalek, 'Nebula nail', Doctor Who logo.

I used:
George - Bloom as a base for all the nails. Collection 2000 - Moonlight Shine for all the outlines. BYS - Glittering Purple, Gosh - Holographic and Models Own - Juicy Jules for the Nebula Nails.

Week of Geek Day 4: Live Long and Prosper (Star Trek Nails)

I can remember watching Star Trek: The Next Generation with my Dad all the time when I was little but I never really knew what was going on! I had to do a bit of wikipedia-ing for this mani to make sure I got all the colours and badges right. The uniforms and insignia are all (mostly) based on The Original Series.

Pinky to thumb: Science and medical, engineering and security, command and helm, ST for Star Trek, Vulcan Salute.

I used:
Uniforms: No7 - Poolside Blue, Barry M - Raspberry, Mixture of BYS - Astro Gold and Go - Shade 04.
Collection 2000 - Moonlight Shine. W7 Black.
ST: George - Mysterious. Gosh - Holographic. BYS - Metallic Fuschia. Collection 2000 - Gold.
Vulcan Salute: No7 - Betty Blues. Collection 2000 - Moonlight Shine.

Week of Geek Day 3: Autobots, transform and roll out!

Maybe it's not credible to like Transformers since it's now a multi million dollar franchise but I really like the films. Robot fighting, explosions and amazing CGI, what's not to love?! I saw the third film yesterday. The 3D is stunning and the action sequences are much better than in the last two films because you can actually see them Transforming instead of it being a blur of metal and camera cuts. It's very long and it kind of drags towards the end but it still gets a thumbs up from me!

I posted a picture of these nails incomplete on Twitter to see if anyone could guess the theme and Jenni said that she saw Darth Vader in there and she is so right. Check out the middle picture and tell me that an upside down Autobots logo doesn't look like Darth Vader's mask!

Pinky to thumb: 'T' for Transformers, Bumblebee colours, Autobots logo, Optimus Prime colours, Decepticons logo.

I used:
W7 - Black, Collection 2000 - Moonlight Shine, NYC Glossies - 243B, George - Natural White (under the yellow), Go - Shade 4, George - Scarlet Kiss.
