I Might Miss My Day At The Races

Things are pretty hectic with my exams at the moment but I'll be squeezing in a post when I have time! My last one is on Monday and it can't come fast enough.

I've seen loads of swatches of the new Cult Nails collection - A Day At The Races - and I fell in love with a few of the colours. However, they're a bit out of my normal 'price comfort zone' for polishes but after some coaxing from a few ladies on Twitter and Maria herself (the owner of Cult Nails) informing me that they were running an offer that ends today, I ordered 4 bottles. The shades I chose are Let Me Fly and Cruisin' Nude from the 'Races' collection (swatches here and here), and My Kind of Cool Aid and Iconic from an older collection.

BUT, I saw a blog post from Cult Nails (here) this morning explaining that they're having some problems with international shipping regulations after one customer's order was destroyed before she received it because the contents broke some rules. So all international orders are on hold for the time being. It's kind of annoying that I may not get my order, but better that than Maria risks posting it and something horrid happening to the package.

Lol at the missing handle, I think the bottle got trodden on once a long time ago and the lid cracked to pieces.

Thanks for all the links you guys left on yesterday's post where I asked if anyone knew of any British Nail Bloggers! I've put them all together on a separate page and I'll keep adding as I discover more. Click here to see the page. You can find the page at any time in the sidebar, just click on 'Best of British'.

Calling All British Nail Bloggers

I'm on a mission to find as many nail bloggers from the UK that I can. I really want to find some blogs with content more relevant to me. As much as I love drooling over swatches from the latest OPI, Essie, China Glaze etc. collections, it sucks that I can't actually get hold of them at anywhere near a reasonable price.

I'd love to see more info about brands that I can run in to Boots or Superdrug and throw in my basket. So if you are a nail blogger blogging about British polish or you know of any of blogs that do, I'd love it if you leave a link for me to visit in the comments.

Blink 182 Nail Art

Blink 182 may just be my favourite band ever. Not in a crazy, superfan way - it's just that I've been listening to their music for years and years and I never get fed up of hearing it. I was supposed to be seeing them play in July but the tour was postponed since they haven't finished recording the new album. The gig's been postponed a year, yeah you heard me right, 12 months! WTF guys?! But whatever, I'm not gonna stop loving them because of that. So I thought I'd pay tribute the best way I know how... on my nails.

Here's a better one of my thumb, it's at a
funny angle in all the other shots.

If you want to know any of the products or techniques used, just leave a comment and I'll reply below.

My First Pink Wednesday

Pink Wednesdays is a great little scheme thought up by the ladies from Colour Coated, Glitta Gloves and Life and Polish. The premise is really simple. On Wednesdays, you wear pink polish and post it on your blog. If you want to join in, just click here to see more details.
Today is my first pink Wednesday!
I don't post (or even wear) many pink manicures, but when I was deciding which pink to use, I saw that I have way more than I thought and I hardly ever use them so this will be a great way for me to get more use out of my pink polishes.

Rimmel Colour Rush Quad - Bold Behaviour
E.L.F. Cream Eyeliner - Black
Jerome Alexander Mascara

Thanks for the great response to my EOTD's. I honestly didn't think they would solicit much of a response but you seem to like them so I'll keep them coming!
I hope you like the little animation I made. It was a last minute idea so the make-up's already been on for a few hours and is not perfect, but in the future I'll definitely be trying to do GIFs like this for my EOTD posts.

On my last EOTD post, Alice asked what brushes I use so I thought I'd show you. Here they are...

The short and wide one on the left is E.L.F.'s eyeshadow brush which you can buy here. The other two are from the brand, 'Royal' and I picked them up in Poundland. They're both the same but I use one for light shades and one for darker colours.

Revision Nails

Civil Twilight - Letters From The Sky

I have a short attention span. I always have and probably always will. It doesn't affect me all the time, just when I have to do something really boring! I can get totally engrossed in something I enjoy and waste away hours on end without even realising but as soon as I have to concentrate on something I'm not interested in for more than twenty minutes, everything else becomes infinitely exciting. Even cleaning starts to look like a more appealing option that what I'm doing.
It's not a good trait to have when it comes to studying.
I have a lot of exams coming up and I kept giving up on my revision to paint my nails so I decided I needed a mani that I wouldn't want to take off.

I know glitter is a massive pain to remove so I decided to apply a very thick, glitter manicure that I wouldn't be tempted to remove any time soon due to all the effort that would entail.
I decided on Models Own Juicy Jules because I absolutely love this holographic glitter polish but I've never worn it on its own before.

There are loads of pictures because I just couldn't narrow it down. This polish is so pretty.

Gosh Holographic
Models Own Juicy Jules
NYC Top Coat

I applied 2 coats of Gosh Holographic first because I didn't trust the glitter to cover the whole nail without leaving little gaps.
I probably used 4 or 5 coats of the Juicy Jules to make it super removal proof and then a few coats of NYC Top Coat to smooth things over.

In Sunlight

And slightly blurry so you can see the rainbow.

In Artificial Light

The colours sparkle more under artificial light. I spent a lot of time admiring the glitter when I was in my exam because there were fluorescent lights which made it super gorgeous and distracting!
And blurry for the holo-ness...

Bundle Monster Nail Art
As you will know if you've been reading this blog for a while, I'm a huge fan of the Bundle Monster plates and use them in most of my manicures. Well... Bundle Monster were amazing enough to donate a set of plates and a selection of Fimo Canes to the giveaway!*

Fimo Canes
You can create such amazing nail art with these simple sticks of clay. In case you haven't seen them before and are wondering how these colourful sticks can be used on your nails, you can see how to use them here and see one in use here. You basically have to slice them up, just like a cucumber, using a sharp knife and then you can use them in all kinds of combinations on your nails.
There are four packets of these to be won.

Bundle Monster Plates
I LOVE the Bundle Monster nail art plates. They work the same way as Konad plates but have different, kind of edgier, designs than you won't find on any Konad plates. For a video tutorial of how to use these plates, click here. I'll also include a stamper and scraper so that you have everything you need to start stamping.

Follow Bundle Monster on Twitter and Facebook to keep up with the latest product releases.

Molten Metals

Not much to update today. I know it's been a few days since I last blogged but it seems like nothing has really happened except a trip to the dentist today where I had another wisdom tooth pulled out. I've spent a lot of time sat inside staring at all my notes from school because I have an exam on Friday which I need to study for but it's such a mammoth task I have no idea where to start! My plan is to knuckle down tomorrow and cram enough information in to my brain to pass.

How To Get Ahead In Nail Blogging

Starting a blog is hard work and it’s tough starting out unless you already have friends in the blogging community. Don’t expect to pick up hundreds of followers overnight, it takes hard work and dedication. If your heart is truly in it, you’ll get along just fine.

I’m not pretending that I’m successful or special in any way, these are just some tips I’ve picked up over the last year that might help you get ahead in nail blogging. However, I do not intend for this to be seen as a guide for how to get high amounts of followers. It's about being a part of the community and reaching an audience that loves to read what you have to offer.

All observations appearing in this work are based on my personal experiences of blogging. Any resemblance to real blogs or persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

Do Not Spam

This is the golden rule of blogging. Spamming will have a very detrimental effect on the success of your blog. Avoid it at all costs!!
‘Spamming’ refers to leaving your links all over the internet, particularly on other peoples' blogs, in the hope that people will visit your blog. These links are often accompanied by impersonal phrases like ‘Great blog! Check out mine’ or ‘Hey, I follow you. Follow me too?’ It’s likely these types of comments will be deleted.

Imagine you are this nail blogger who has been blogging for months, or even years, to build a dedicated readership. You work hard preparing pictures and posts, only to log on and find that someone is using your blog as a platform to score exposure for themself. I’m sure you can see why it’s not appreciated.

People will remember you if you leave spam on their blog, and not in a good way. They are more likely to avoid your blog forever than follow it.

The best way to approach people when you’re starting out is to send a personal email to each of the bloggers you admire. Explain that you’re just starting out and would appreciate if they could drop by your blog. If they like what you have to offer they will probably follow you but if they don’t, just leave it there. One email will suffice, don’t be pushy.

Cris perfectly summed up her feelings, which lots of people share, for this apparently recent phenomenon here.

Get Involved

Read as many nail blogs as you can. This will inspire you and keep you up to date with all the latest nail news. Leave friendly comments on your favourite posts and as people start to see your name a lot, they will click through to your profile and hopefully visit your blog.

Utilise Social Networking Sites

Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are great tools that shouldn’t be put to waste. They’re a great way of making friends in the blogging community and picking up advice.
Start a Facebook fan page for your blog
Many people don’t use Blogger or Google Friend Connect but will still read your blog. Facebook is a great way to reach the people that may not have another way of staying up to date with your posts.
Follow your fellow bloggers on Twitter
Get stuck in. Join in with conversations. This is the best way to be noticed by the people that can help you get seen. But be friendly, not pushy. Do not ask people to follow you, just let it happen.

Keep Your Nails Healthy

It’s important to keep your nails looking healthy. Nobody wants to see sad cuticles that have been starved of moisture or look red and sore from being snipped off. Moisturise your hands regularly and try to avoid cutting your cuticles.

Michèle wrote a great post about taking care of your cuticles that you can see here.

Take Good Pictures

In nail blogging, every tiny detail counts so it’s important that your pictures are of good quality. They should be well lit, in focus and the colours as close to real life as possible. No one expects you to have perfect pictures, especially when you’re just starting out. Photographing your own nails is a tricky business, but over time you’ll work out your own technique and see your pictures improving.

You do not need expensive camera equipment to take great pictures. Most bloggers use their compact digital cameras. Cell phone cameras are a no no.

No one will begrudge you for retouching your photos before you post them as long as you haven’t taken it to extremes or seriously manipulated the content. It is completely acceptable to tweak the colour settings if the colours in the picture are not true to real life, or airbrush out any unsightly scabs or wounds around your nails.

To see how I take and edit my photographs, click here.

Be Friendly and Informal

Try not to sound too formal, but keep it professional. A friendly writing style will endear your readers to you and keep them interested. However, that doesn’t mean we want to hear every detail of your day. It’s nice to hear about things that are going on in a blogger’s life so we can relate to them but it’s not good to chatter about your crazy Saturday night (although I have been guilty of this on occasion!) or best friend’s relationship problems.

Have Patience

Gaining followers takes time and dedication. I blogged every single day for a few weeks before I even had one follower. I knew that if I had posted something worth reading, people would come across it by themselves and that I would have to produce consistently interesting posts so that people would want to continue reading my blog.
As soon as you have a few followers or people that enjoy reading your blog, news of your venture will spread. If people really like your blog, they might add it to their blog roll.

So there it is. Just some advice for anyone that might be struggling to get their blog noticed. Thank you for reading and if you have any experiences you want to share or any more advice you’d like to offer, just leave it in the comments.

I reserve the right to edit this post at any further date if I change my mind about any of the content!

Got Daisies?

This is my favourite so far of all the ones I've done with the new Bundle Monster plates. I wasn't sure how it would turn out when I decided to add a bit of extra detail by filling in the flowers. Sometimes, especially if I pick a bad colour, details like that can make things look overdone but this isn't one of those times.
I wouldn't expect that green/blue to compliment the purple shades as well as it does but it's just one of those lucky combinations that works without even trying.

Blue Blood

Last night (or rather this morning) I didn't get to sleep until after the sun came up! If anyone's ever done that, don't tell me it's not an amazing feeling. I went out in town then watched Napoleon Dynamite and couldn't sleep until 5.30. I don't know why I've shared that with you today. It's completely unrelated to anything but I guess I just want to say everyone should do it more often! I'm very much a night person. I'd much rather sleep all day and be awake all night.

This is a look I wear all the time when I go on a night out, normally false eyelashes added in too to add to the party peeper look! It's my twist on a classic smokey eye, I use a dark purple which I think compliments my eye colour better than heavy black or grey.

The Nailasaurus has 750 followers! That means giveaway time!
As a big thank you to everyone that reads my little blog, I'll be holding a small giveaway very soon which will include a few polishes I purchased myself and some gifts from an exciting sponsor. I'm behind on everything at the moment (*hangs head*) so it will be a while until I have the whole thing up and running because I'm still figuring out all the logistics since this will be a lot bigger than any giveaway I've held in the past.
Thank you so much for reading!!

Quick Born Pretty Plates Review

When I saw that Born Pretty Store were selling Konad replicas for $1.55 each I knew I had to buy a few. I've been lusting after M78 and M79 for so long but my budget never seems to stretch to Konad plates these days. So I bought 4 new plates from Born Pretty for about the same price as one genuine Konad plate and I didn't pay any shipping which is what always puts me off buying Konads.

I got M76, M78, M79 and M57. I already have Konad M57 but I thought I would buy Born Pretty's version too so that I could compare them and I'm glad I did.

I scanned in all the plates I bought along with M57 so all the images are relative sizes for side-by-side comparison.

I was disappointed with BP's M57, the designs are so small! It would be a push to get them to cover my ring finger. Compared to Konad's 15.5x12mm, the all over designs on the Born Pretty plate are only 12.5x10mm (no infographic this time, sorry!)

But. I can't complain because the image on the product page clearly shows that the designs are quite small. I was so excited when I was buying the plates that I didn't spend much time checking the pictures!

I'm really pleased with the other three plates. The patterns on M78 and M79 are the same size as the Konads which definitely redeemed the plates in my eyes as these were the ones I was most looking forward to.
The designs are really well cut and good sizes so I think I'm going to be getting a lot of use out of them.

L-R: Konad M57, BP M57, BP M76, BP M78, BP M79.

You can buy these plates here. They're back to the regular price of $2.99 each now but that's still a steal compared to Konads and the shipping's completely free. Just steer clear of M57 unless you have tiny nails!
These products were purchased by me.

Today has been a very busy and exciting day. I got my car back on the road today after 6 months of relying on my feet, public transport and parents to get around! I don't mind walking everywhere, in fact I've grown to quite enjoy it and still plan to walk as much as I can, but it's really nice to know that I can just hop in the car whenever I feel like it and go wherever I want. I really missed that freedom when I was pedestrianised!

I set out with plate BM214 planning to use the Stag design as Emily requested on a recent post. However, the Stags came out looking like vertically challenged cows! I couldn't get the horns or legs to stick to my stamper. This could just be my stamper because it has been a bit uncooperative of late but it could also be that the design is just too fiddly. I'd love to know if anyone's tried this design yet and found the same as me, or whether it's just something I'm doing that's making it go wrong.

So I moved on to another pattern from the plate - this celtic, swirly design. I kind of struggled to think of original ways to use it at first but I like the ornate way it turned out.
